I wanted a basic and affordable GPS. It is doing a great job. I did hesitate between this version and the 140S which spells the name of the street instead of just saying ‘turn right’, but so far I don’t think I need the S option, and the name of the street is written on the screen. Also it doesn’t have real-time traffic report (and this is not a free service anyway even if your GPS can take it) it does have some knowledge of typical traffic at given time, like google map by example. However, the real-time could be nice for construction works. Itès very easy to use on the fly.

When I first got it, I plugged it to my computer, went on TomTom website to download their manager and did a bunch of updates. It is slow but it is working. Also TomTom has a great price for map update. Instead of paying 0 to buy one new map per year you pay to get 4 updates per year…

If you are like me and just need basic GPS function for random or vacation trip, i.e. where timing is not an issue this is perfect. However, if you are a sales rep, get an advance model and pay for the updates and real-time info.

I also after trying both the 3D and 2D modes, I now use the 2D mode zoomed-out.

Garmin is much better – BRWNIGRL13 – USA
I own a Garmin (comparative in price)and I have tried this TomTom. The TomTom is very easy to use and set up is great. It’s very compact. I like how you can download other owner’s street corrections. It also has a lot of customizing features.

What I don’t like.
The TomTom seems to always pick out of the way directions both in distance and in time. Garmin picks the same routes I would have taken 9 out of 10 times.

You have to manually change the display from night to day. I leave very early in the morning so I need night-time display and then I have to change it back to day-time when I’m leaving work to go home. Not a big deal, but the Garmin does it automatically based on sunrise and sunset times (a nice feature while you are driving). You also cannot change the brightness on the display (you can on the Garmin).

If you zoom out on the display, it doesn’t stay zoomed out. As soon as you come to the next calculated turn, it zooms in and stays zoomed in. The Garmin also zooms in for the turn but then zooms back out to where you set it.

After using both products, I love my Garmin and I am putting my TomTom on Ebay.

Great but not a portable – Suction Cup does not work – M. Wells – Glendale Calif
Having been an owner of a Tom Tom One XL, I was happy to see a smaller version that I could take on business trips. I was exited to see the new lane features and verbalizing the street names. However, I could not be more disappointed with my latest Tom Tom.

1. The suction cup sticks about twice. I purchased a dashboard “pad” to attach it to and it did not work. I finally put velcro on it and permanently stuck in my old truck. So much for “Portable” more like unusable. The only exception was in a PT Cruiser rental I tucked it under the passenger visor.

2. The verbalization of the street names are unrecognizable about half the time. I now live in San Jose and it pronouces it Son Woosy. So that feature is a waste of time.

3. Lane featurs – They work sometimes but if there are multiple exits it does not, and it fills your screen so you cannot read the name of the exit (remeber I turned off that feature because of the unrecognizable pronouciation.)

To add insult to injury, they offered 18 months of map update service for only $, when you go to buy it you have to buy a full upgrade for $ then the $ for upgrades. I can buy a new unit for less than that and get the most recent upgrade.

I will be looking at other Company’s for my next GPS

I bought this receiver specifically because it is a pin receiver, not a USB. I can keep my Tom Tom 630 plugged into power via its USB cable while still having access to traffic reports.

Things I don’t like about the unit:
1) You have to make sure you get the PIN all the way in; mine has a slight tendency to feel like it’s set when it’s really not. Not a dealbreaker for me, just a minor annoyance.
2) The plug is a straight plug, not a right angle like the USB plug for the power. This means I have to set the Tom Tom about an inch higher on the windshield than I would like so the cable doesn’t interfere with the dash. Again, not a dealbreaker; I’ll probably buy a gooseneck mounting clip to avoid the problem entirely.

I’ve found that the traffic reports in my area are inaccurate more often than not. For example, on a recent Saturday morning I drove 45 miles to visit a friend. The traffic report indicated a construction delay. There was indeed construction, but the construction was in a slightly different location than the device indicated, and there was no delay. The device also indicated an accident with a delay. As I drove by the location, I saw neither accident nor delay; the traffic was typical light early weekend traffic. I got a third report of a delay on my way home. The device indicated a delay when the traffic was still moving at the speed limit. The unit gave the all clear indication just as we got to the residual backup from a cleared accident. So, I think the reports are best used as a warning that I should turn on the radio and listen to the local traffic report to find out what’s really going on. Tom Tom doesn’t control the local traffic service, so I don’t consider the problem a failing of either Tom Tom or the receiver design.

Promt and great service – –
The item arrived in fact earlier and well packaged. The traffic receiver works without any problem. As soon as I connected to the base, the GPS recognized the receiver and showed the traffic patters. As I live around Baltimore / DC area, the traffic information for this area seem to be valid. It correctly showed where there are traffic jams / road work and also reported correctly when I cleared out of these jams.

Doesn’t work in Europe – Jim –
The antenna was easy to install and was quickly recognized by my TomTom GO 930, however, it will not work with the maps of Western Europe. The TomTom doesn’t even try to tune the the antenna, it just displays a screen that states the RDS antenna is not compatible with the current (Europe) map. Bottom line is if you visit Europe (I am currently in Germany), save your money and don’t buy this product thinking it will work for you outside of North America.

I bought this for our TomTom 920 after a year of frustration with the provided mount.

It is easy to set up–I just picked the correct adapter for my 920 and snapped it into the mount. I live in a state where windshield mount is not legal, so I use a Bracketron UFM-100BL Nav-Mat GPS Friction Dash Pad. It has AWESOME suction–nice and strong. It doesn’t tip over or come loose. We use the TomTom in multiple cars that require the arm to be bent in different positions and so far (a couple of weeks of use), the arm is still stiff and doesn’t wobble.

I’m very happy with this mount and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to replace the lackluster mount TomTom sent with their GPS.

I ordered this mount mostly because I wanted the gooseneck and the AC louvre mounts. What was delivered was a different product that is designed so multiple Tom Tom models can be attached to the gooseneck mount: the One, the Go, and one other. I called Amazon and spoke to a CS agent who made notes about the error. She told me someone would get back to me but never did. I kept the delivered model because it has the gooseneck and works with my TomTom Go 730, and the gooseneck alone costs more than the delivered product. Not sure if the listed product is actually for sale or not since no one ever called or emailed back. Anyway, if you are looking for the AC louvre mount for the Go models, be aware that it is not necessarily included with the product sent unless they corrected their stock.

Also, the gooseneck tends to vibrate the GPS unit fairly easily on rough streets. This makes it difficult to give the GPS a quick glance. Probably better for freeway driving than heavy city street driving like I do.

I love this antenna. I’ve been using it for my Garmin GPSMAP 60CS since I bought it several years ago. Well, recently after a long day of kayaking, watching the STS-119 shuttle launch, and then battling traffic to get home, I was exhausted and sore. I haphazardly yanked on the antenna cable to remove it from my kayak’s deck bag, and the connector separated from the cable and stayed attached to the receiver’s antenna port.

Oops. Truly not a fault of the antenna. I bought another one quickly.

I’ve had this thing on my kayak (in fresh water and salt water), on top of my car, clipped to the outside of my backpack, you name it. It has performed admirably every step of the way.

And the performance is excellent. On my last kayak outing, I was getting a consistent 5-foot accuracy on my 60CS, which I have never once achieved with the built-in antenna. Doing the Rock Springs Run here in Central FL with consistent heavy tree cover, I have always been able to get 8-foot accuracy or better.

At any rate, it’s such a significant difference that I’m buying another one immediately, and when I upgraded receivers recently, I chose the Colorado 400T over the Oregon 400T specifically because the Oregon doesn’t have a port for an external antenna!

One important note, though, is the connector type – choose carefully. If you have a model that has the antenna port on the back (like the 600-series), then choose the angle connector. If your antenna port is on top of the unit (like the Colorado), choose the straight connector. I made the mistake of getting the angle connector for the Colorado, and it’s impossible for me to remove the connector without pliers, due to the tight connector and minimal finger space to get a good grip on it.

Also, in my experience (having had both a 9-ft cable and a 3-ft cable), if you’re doing any hiking or geocaching with it, do yourself a favor and get the shorter cable. My longer cable spent all of its time coiled up and getting in the way. You could always get an extension cable for the rare occasions where you need the length, and leave it at home the rest of the time.

Great antenna – fixed my Nuvi 350 reception problem – A. Wiersch – Lantana, TX USA (near Dallas)
My Garmin nuvi 350 received satellite signals fine at first, then later (months after) started have trouble acquiring satellites and sometimes lost them for long periods of time. I did a little research and it seems possible that there is a problem that can occur where the GPS thinks an external antenna is attached when it isn’t (due to a defective or failed part). Plugging this antenna into my Garmin has so far completely resolved the reception problem. This antenna seems well built and designed and the reception seems excellent too.

I have the Garmin equivalent as well as this. Both are good and both give the the same number of bars boost vs using the GPS in the interior. I rated it 4 instead of 5 because their promotional material claims it to be superior to Garmin and it is just as good but not better. Just buy the cheapest of the two.

Came with 2006 maps. I called Audivox and they sold me an update cheap.
The unit was discounted for a reason, it had older maps. If you are a suer and do not research this before hand, that is your fualt.. nothingis free…
Wish other buyer would think about that.

I also learned this unit is supporting 10 differant regions around the world.

I’ve been using the Jensen Nav101 for a couple of months with a VM9512HD system. I like the navigation user interface but feel the route selection is not that great.
One thing that bugs me is that if you want to do navigation without sound so you can listen to the radio without being interrupted constantly – there’s no way to do that. Even if you mute the navigation sound, the nav101 will still barge into your music and play nothing.
I’m also not too happy about that fact that map updates dont seem to be available so after a couple of years it might be too outdated to be useful.

I like this GPS for its most important feature, the ability to direct me. All of the features like the mp3,video etc, i havent bothered. It does its best to say the street names which is pretty funny. In the description, it says something like it has over 7,000 POI’s. That is true but there is no way to type in exactly what you are looking for. For example, if i want to find a Brueggers Bagels nearby, I have to go to stores and scroll through thousands of options, its riduculous! Besides that, its lovely. Oh yea, if you like to drive with loud music, good luck trying to hear the GPS.

Not so great – RLF – Northern California
I gave this to my husband for Christmas. He likes all the features, but he said it takes some time to figure out because it doesn’t come with very good directions. Last weekend we used it to go on a 3 hour trip and it crashed 3 times. Needless to say, that was a big disappointment.

I really love my LSY-500 after I figured out how it worked. The product it self is every thing advertised and more that’s the good new the bad new is that I am a very novice computer user and the instructions that came with my unit were literaly none existent. There is good support form the company tech team via e-mail but it still took me 2 weeks finally get it to work.
